La maladie est-elle une réaction ?

Abstract : This article aims at examining the content and the maybe criticisable presuppositions of a certain, well-determined conception of disease, which can be found in the history and philosophy of medicine, the somatic as well as the psychic one, and which can be defined as follows: disease is not the very condition, but it is the reaction against the condition. It results from this conception that a symptom can be construed both as an organ and as an obstacle, that it is possible to distinguish between factual and fundamental registers of disease, and that one is able to rigorously build a concept of "breakdown". But this conception, which leads tantamount to making disease a means towards health, finds it very limitations in such implicit finalism and optimism.
