'Elle a teint ses rideaux en rouge' : entre manière et résultativité.

This paper assesses the exact function of the complement introduced by EN in structures such as 'Elle a teint ses rideaux en rouge' (literally, 'She dyed her curtains 'in'red'). Since these complements answer the question 'How ?', the possibility of viewing them as object-oriented manner adverbials is first investigated - and discarded. They are then paralleled to the secondary predicates already identified for other resultative constructions. But I show that they depart from the complements of inherently resultative verbs such as 'mettre' (cf. literally 'put X in anger/put X pregnant'), which direcly select either a PP projected by the preposition EN or an AP. We propose that they pattern rather like 'transformer' (cf. lit. 'transform X in frog') : the complement corresponds to a resultative augmentation of the argument structure of the verb, with EN (lit. 'in') acting as a Result functional head selecting either for a NP (with 'transformer') or an AP (with 'teindre').

Cet article examine la fonction exacte des compléments introduits par EN dans des structures comme 'Elle a teint ses rideaux en rouge'. Ces compléments répondant à la question 'Comment ?' nous examinons tout d'abord la possibilité de les analyser comme des adverbiaux de manière orientés objet, avant de la rejeter. Nous les confrontons ensuite aux prédications secondes telles qu'elles ont été analysées pour certains types de constructions résultatives. Mais nous montrons qu'elles se distinguent des constructions impliquant un verbe résultatif inhérent comme (mettre en colère, mettre en cloque), qui sélectionnent directement un SP en EN ou un SAdj. Nous proposons de les rapprocher des constructions impliquant des verbes comme 'transformer' (cf. transformer quelqu'un en crapaud): dans les deux cas, le complément correspond à une augmentation résultative de la structure argumentale du verbe (Folli & Ramchand 2005), dont EN est la tête, qui sélectionne tantôt un SN (classe 'transformer'), tantôt un SAdj (classe 'teindre').
