Une gamme de l'altérité : figures de l'étranger dans la France méridionale des années 1920

Abstract : The analysis aims to examine the invisible borders which defined 'otherness' in southern France in the 1920s. This involves considering the dividing lines and the various collective representations that governed relations with "the other", with foreigners and with migrants. This paper will also consider how "otherness" was understood and judged in these years when immigration was so important and so widely debated. This examination of attitudes to migrants and foreigners shows the deep complexity of these invisible borders with their mixed, shifting contours. Such borders did not so much oppose "the French" to "the foreigner", but functioned in such a way as to suggest a spectrum of nuances and ambivalences.
