"Indexicals and context: How context constrains and is changed by the use of certain indexical referring procedures (deixis, "anadeixis" and anaphora)"
Abstract
The paper aims to investigate the constraints that context places on the functioning and interpretation of the use of various indexical expressions in realizing certain context-bound referential procedures (deixis, "anadeixis" and anaphora), and the effects which that use has on the context it then creates. It argues that an account of these phenomena requires positing an interaction between the indexicals' intrinsic semantic-pragmatic properties (the province of the language system) and the particular discourse-referential procedure which they help to realize (i.e. the use that a speaker/writer makes of the system's resources in context).
