Le picard de Nérine: moyen picard, picard moyen ?

Abstract : Is Nérine’s language Middle Picard, an average Picard or Picard as a medium ? On the basis of works on Middle Picard, this paper reassesses the conclusion that Nerine’s Picard is a mere fancy artifact. It shows that while Molière retains only a subset of Picard phonological and morphological markers, and sets aside expected dialectal features, he does so knowingly. What is staged is then a plausible Picard variety, which, face to French and next to Occcitan, can act both as a sparring partner and a go-between in the design of the scene.
