Acceptions, dénotation, frontières du concept de valeur

Abstract : As we tried to identify and compare the implicit and explicit values declared by 191 junior High School music teachers and because we assume that the clarifcation of values helps to make that teaching intelligible, we have been led to examine the concept of value from a perspective focused on defnition, category and form. The purpose of the article is to confront the diferent meanings of the word value through the (qualitative) method of the « close associative arrays » particularly suited to concepts that are problematic (Van der Maren, 1996). (Qualitative and quantitative) analyses of discourse using the software Tropes (Ghiglione, Matalon, Bacri, 1985) enabled us to confrm this approach through compari-son. Te logico-linguistic form taken by the expressed values and norms is then analyzed to diferentiate these two closely-related concepts.Te results from the comparison of several defnitions of the word « value » reveal a certain number of invariants: 1) the value belongs to the world of ideas but the debate remains open as to its belonging to the living world; 2) the idea remains valid and has a certain capacity for assessment; 3) it is an idea between preference and desire, and as such is motivating. Beyond the invariants, the defnitions which have been compared express tension, between immanence and transcendence, between meaning and lack of meaning, between ontological category and appreciative category.
