Le poids du contexte dans les études de risques. Réflexions à partir d’une géographie sociale et politique

Abstract : Geography of risk acknowledges social and political aspects as key drivers, aside the always-dominant hazard-related environmental elements. Both contextual and social construction approaches allow addressing socially driven conditions and contingent processes of risk construction, which are closely related with the production of space. By embodying social and political geography of risk in a broader social sciences’ landscape, we resort to appropriate concepts and methodological frameworks in order to set out autonomous research questions, away from natural environmental framings. A socially and spatially rooted understandings of the production of space gives room to nuanced interpretations of risks, its causes, but also its differentiated implications on societies and places. What are also at stake are the position of the researcher as well as the role of public research in producing knowledge about controversial social issues (like risks), which are often reduced to technical and operational aspects.
