SN démonstratifs et anadeixis : sens « spatial » ou valeurs tributaires d'une stratégie pragmatique potentielle ?

Abstract : This paper attempts to show that the use of demonstratives in French and English (as well as in other languages) marked for the deictic distinction "proximal" vs. "distal" cannot be satisfactorily analyzed in terms of the intended referent's degree of proximity or distance with respect to the speaker (or to the addressee) in the utterance situation, as under the traditional conception. A more accurate analysis needs to take account of the communicative strategy adopted by the speaker: their strong personal involvement in the case of the proximal member of the opposition, and his or her subjective dissociation or alternatively, alignment with the addressee, in that of the (unmarked) distal member.
