Indexicals: Cognitive orientation, viewpoint, and the construction of discourse

Abstract This study argues against the predominant conception of indexical markers in the relevant literature. This assumes that they are simply tools for the retrieval of a referent that is already installed in some discourse, as a function of truth conditions (an "objectivist" conception, then). The chapter discusses in this respect the neo-Gricean approach of Levinson (2000) and the (in part) Gricean one of Gundel et al. (cf. the "Givenness Hierarchy"), as well as that of Ariel in terms of cognitive accessibility. Yet a consideration of a number of attested examples in both English and French reveals a functioning of a quite different kind, in which the use of a given marker in context is motivated rather by subjective and interactional, dialogic factors: viewed from this perspective, the markers at issue do not reflect the hierarchies or scales within which they are ordered in these models. Instead, they function rather to establish a particular interlocutive relationship between speaker and addressee (or writer and reader), to express an epistemic attitude or stance on the speaker's part, or to signal a particular type of structuring of the discourse under construction which is to be made at a given point in its development.
Résumé. Ce travail s'inscrit en faux contre la conception prédominante dans la littérature sur les marqueurs indexicaux. Celle-ci les présente comme de simples outils de récupération d'un référent déjà installé dans un discours quelconque, en fonction de la condition vériconditionnelle (« objectiviste », donc). Le chapitre évoque à cet égard les approches néo-gricéennes (Levinson, 2000) et (pour partie) gricéennes (Gundel et al., 1993 : la « Givenness Hierarchy »), puis celle d'Ariel conçue en termes d'accessibilité cognitive. Mais la prise en compte de nombre d'exemples attestés en anglais comme en français révèle un tout autre fonctionnement, où l'emploi de tel marqueur indexical en contexte est motivé plutôt par des facteurs subjectifs et interactionnels, dialogiques : vus sous cette angle-là, les marqueurs concernés ne reflètent pas les hiérarchies ou échelles dans lesquelles ceux-ci sont rangés dans ces modèles. Ils fonctionnent au contraire pour établir telle relation interlocutive entre locuteur et allocutaire (ou scripteur et lecteur), pour exprimer une attitude épistémique ou expressive de l'énonciateur, et/ou pour signaler la structuration du discours en gestation qui est à effectuer à tel ou tel moment de son déroulement.
