Données anciennes et bilan de l’occupation protohistorique du Fort à Saint-Thibéry (Hérault)

Abstract : Despite being discovered in the XIXth century et investigated since, the site of 'Fort' in Saint-Thibery remains one of the least known protohistorical settlement of the Languedoc-Roussilon region. It is however, a rare exemple amongst the Iron Age sites, to be associated with a specialised activitiy : basalt extaction et probably grinding stone production, throughout several centuries. The latest archeaological investigations were lead by J.-P. Besombes-Vailhé, between 1984 and 1986. Several sondages done in the western part of the site allowed the observation of archaeological layers, mainly disturbed by historical activities. This article is proposing an inventory and analyses of the material collected during the recent sondages, unpublished until now. Some characteristic markers can be use to clearly define chronological tendances. Firstly, thanks to the oldest material, the sondages confirme a settlement on the hill of 'Le Fort' as old as the Late Bronze Age (Bronze final IIIb). The ceramics dating from this period appear in all the identified archaeological layers. A quite long absence of remains, between the VIII and the VIIth centuries seems to be significant for the history of the site. Concerning the end of the first Iron Age, the ceramic study doesn't sustain the idea of an occupation through the VI-Vth century BC, as material evidence of the time is lacking. However, some indicators are prouving, without doubt, the use of the site of 'Le Fort' circa 400 BC until the last century BC.
