A. Proche-orient, Depuis plusieurs millénaires, les chasseurscueilleurs du Levant, les Natoufiens, s'étaient sédentarisés et habitaient des bâtiments circulaires, dont la base était construite en pierre. La maîtrise de la construction a donc précédé la transformation de l'économie. L'apparition de sanctuaires mégalithiques, tels que Göbekli Tepe dans le sud anatolien (Schmidt, 2015), vers 9500 avant J.-C., ayant nécessité la taille, le transport, l'agencement et l'érection de milliers de blocs de pierre, est contemporaine des toutes premières agricultures, de l'époque du Néolithique précéramique A (PPNA), 2010.

Stordeur, Quoi qu'il en soit, une fois les techniques de construction de bâtiments rectangulaires maîtrisées, ce type d'architecture devient presque exclusif au Proche-Orient, que ce soit dans le Levant, la Mésopotamie ou le sud de l'Anatolie. Sur de nombreux sites, cette architecture prend la forme d'un habitat agglutiné, dont l'exemple le plus fameux est le village de Çatal Höyük en Anatolie centrale (Turquie), fouillé par James Mellaart, Les raisons de cette transformation des modes d'habiter sont peu claires, 1967.

. C'est, peu après 7000 avant notre ère, vers la fin du PPNB, que le Néolithique s'étend au-delà de sa zone nucléaire initiale (et de Chypre, qui en constitue la périphérie immédiate). Vers l'Ouest

;. Desloges and T. Chambon, En l'absence de traditions rubanées, les tumulus longs sont inconnus. Les tumulus sont circulaires et correspondent à une forme plus tardive du mégalithisme. Ils sont en outre de taille nettement plus réduite que les tumulus circulaires de la façade atlantique. La forme privilégiée de l'inhumation est le dépôt en fosse ou en coffre sans tumulus. L'importation d'objets emblématiques de la société villageoise se manifeste également. Elle concerne une gamme d'objets plus large. Aux grandes lames polies en roches vertes issues des Alpes, aux parures en variscite ibérique et aux vases-supports, se rajoutent, pour la céramique, les assiettes gravées et les cuillères, et, pour l'industrie lithique, les lames en silex blond et en obsidienne. L'érection des premiers bâtiments rectangulaires, notamment ceux de Vertaizon, participe certainement de ce souhait d'ostentation, car ils constituent assurément le signe le plus manifeste du lien avec la société villageoise qui s'est étendue à l'Italie et est présente au-delà des Alpes, Les plus grands tombeaux, des tumulus de plusieurs mètres de haut, peuvent atteindre des centaines de mètres de longueur. Les objets emblématiques de la société villageoise issue des Balkans et provenant d'Italie sont importés sur plusieurs centaines de kilomètres pour être placés dans les tombeaux ou être déposés, intacts, loin de tout espace habité. Les manifestations les plus spectaculaires de ces phénomènes sont visibles autour de la péninsule armoricaine, 1998.

, Considéré, depuis Childe, comme un phénomène purement économique, il n'a de ce fait été analysé jusqu'à présent que sous l'angle de la diffusion de l'agriculture et de l'élevage, comme si les préoccupations des sociétés de l'époque étaient uniquement orientées vers la question de leur mode de subsistance. . Au-néolithique and . Moreau, Au cours du Néolithique moyen les maisons pouvaient être allongées à double abside. Celles reconnues récemment sur le site de Vernègues à Cazan, également en bois et argile, pouvaient atteindre 20 m de développe-ment sur 7 à 8 m de large, 1998.

, local a été largement sollicité dans la construction par les populations de la culture de Fontbouisse (2900 / 2300 avant notre ère) dans la zone dite « des garrigues des Petits Causses ». Tandis que dans les basses plaines littorales les maisons étaient aménagées en bois et en terre, dans la zone intérieure la pierre a constitué (avec le bois) le matériau de base des constructions. Cet horizon dit « de Fontbouisse » se caractérise au plan des productions matérielles par de grosses jarres parfois cerclées de cordons en relief constituant des réserves de denrées ou d'eau, des marmites, des bols, une céramique fine à décor fréquent de cannelures, un outillage de pierre comportant flèches, pointes, poignards, grattoirs ou éléments de faucilles en silex (souvent en silex en plaquettes de Salinelles), 1975.

. Coularou, La maison Fontbouisse « classique » est une construction bâtie en murs épais, de plan subrectangulaire mais ignorant l'angle droit : les extrémités sont arrondies « en abside ». Ces murs en dallettes calcaires sont à double parement, l'intervalle bourré par un amas de blocaille. Les plus étroits ont 0,50 à 0,70 m de large mais le plus souvent ces murs sont beaucoup plus épais, dépassant 1 m de large. Ils pouvaient s'élever jusqu'à hauteur d'homme. La partie supérieure est constituée par une charpente de bois prenant appui sur des poteaux d'axe portant une panne faîtière. Le toit était à double pente, réalisé par l'association de chevrons, L'économie reposait sur la culture des céréales (blé, orge), la collecte des glands de la chênaie, l'élevage des boeufs, des porcs et surtout des chèvres et des moutons, 1976.

, S'agissant des volumes, il existe des maisons d'envergure diverse. Certaines n'ont que 5 à 6 m de long (20 m² de surface habitable, On connaît ensuite toute une gamme tournant autour d'un

, Les plus grandes bâtisses ont une surface interne de 40 à 50 m² avec quelques cas d'exception comme certains édifices de Cambous, longs de 22 à 24 m et une superficie utile dépassant 100 m²

, « maison des hommes »), économique (bergerie) ou la résidence d'une famille dirigeante, pp.21-22

, Chacune a par ailleurs subi des réaménagements au fil du temps : ajouts, rétrécissements, modifications de plan, etc. Il a pu exister des « fermes » isolées dans la forêt mais le modèle le plus courant est celui d'un hameau ou petit village regroupant moins d'une dizaine de maisons collées souvent les unes aux autres, avec murs mitoyens. Un cas original est constitué par le site de Cambous qui comporte une cinquantaine de maisons réparties en « quartiers » séparés, Les portes sont toujours étroites. Parfois les maisons sont associées à des grottes ou à des avens qui ont fait fonction de lieux de stockage ou de sépulture, 1978.

. Colomer, Il existe par contre un nombre limité de sites enclos, souvent situés sur des terrains en relief, enfermés derrière un mur d'enceinte incluant des sortes de « tourelles », constructions circulaires souvent disposées au point d'inflexion du mur d'enceinte. Ces protections peuvent enclore totalement le site (Le Lébous, Boussargues) ou fermer un éperon, La plupart de ces villages sont ouverts c'est-à-dire sans aucun système de protection ou de délimitation, 1990.

. Coularou, Ces tourelles pouvaient être autonomes ou liées à des habitations englobées dans l'enceinte. On les prit au début pour des éléments défensifs à l'image des bastions des sites fortifiés de l'Égée ou de la péninsule Ibérique. Mais leur intégration à l'espace de maisons mitoyennes les fait plutôt considérer comme des réduits à usage domestique (lieux de stockage ?). De fait leur fonction originelle n'est pas totalement élucidée. Quelques fouilles récentes ont permis de mieux approfondir l'organisation interne des maisons Fontbouisse. Contrairement aux très nombreux sites européens aux sols détruits, on est ici dans un milieu protégé où les murs épais et l'effondrement des toitures ont permis la conservation des éléments domestiques. On observe parfois (figure 25) une partition entre une zone intérieure, vers le fond de la maison, Curieusement ces structures rondes sont calibrées de façon parfaite : leur mur, de 1 m de large, enserre un espace de 2,50 m diamètre interne, pp.23-24, 2003.

. Colomer, Dans le cas plus complexe du secteur Ouest de Boussargues, l'une des deux constructions circulaires était nettement vouée à des fonctions de stockage, Les vases à provisions étaient placés contre les parois ou en fond d'édifice, 1990.

, Peu a été écrit sur les sociétés de la culture de Fontbouisse, l'analyse archéologique n'ayant guère été étendue à l'approche sociale. La répétition dans l'organisation interne des maisons laisse entendre que chacune d'elles pouvait correspondre à une famille nucléaire avec enfants (et peutêtre ascendants). Évidemment les deux constructions accolées ainsi que la petite structure ronde de Boussargues-Ouest relevaient d'une même unité familiale. Le site lui-même voyait probablement cohabiter deux familles

, Toutefois les différences observées ne peuvent évidemment s'expliquer en dehors de leur contexte social, culturel et historique : -À Chypre on est face à une société constituée d'abord de pionniers, de migrants issus du continent à une époque où, au Levant, les populations sont impliquées dans un processus de transformations économiques qui en font progressivement des agriculteurs puis des éleveurs. Ces étrangers importent sur l'île un modèle de maisons circulaires dressées à côté d'un grand bâtiment communautaire. Il est intéressant d'observer que l'île fera preuve entre -9000 et -6000 d'un grand conservatisme, contrairement au continent qui, lui, continuera à innover sur sa lancée. À Chypre, la maison ronde ne sera pas remise en question, les grands bâtiments collectifs (ou cultuels ?) non plus. Les « familles » s'organiseront autour de groupements de cellules restreintes, proches ou agglutinées. Même s'il a existé des personnages d'envergure, leur statut ne semble pas transmissible et on ne voit pas d'élite se dégager au sein de cette population. -En Italie du Sud et en France méridionale, on est sur le versant terminal du Néolithique, trois à quatre millénaires après, c'est-à-dire à un stade où les sociétés agro-pastorales sont bien enracinées et ont déjà derrière elles une longue histoire, Ces communautés n'ignoraient pas les tensions et les conflits comme l'attestent les sujets percés de flèche de la grotte du Suquet aux Matelles. Ces confrontations pouvaient prendre corps à une échelle assez large. Des raids de populations haut-caussenardes jusque dans le secteur des petits Causses du Languedoc ne sont pas à écarter. On sait aussi, d'après l'image que renvoient les statuesmenhirs rouergates qu'une dichotomie fonctionnelle séparait la sphère féminine (les femmes connotées par leurs seins renvoient l'image de l'allaitement, la reproduction, le monde domestique) de la sphère masculine (les armes renvoyant aux notions d'activités externes : chasse, guerre, travaux de force)
