Le Brésil vu par les artistes voyageurs. La peinture comme source documentaire au XIX e siècle

Abstract : This article investigates part of the artistic production of a group of French painters who settled in Brazil during the course of the 19th Century. These artists visually documented the social, cultural, and economic aspects of the Brazilian colony. The diffusion of this artistic production contributed for a construction of a national identity of Brazil from the foreign perspective. Through the study of some paintings produced by these traveling artists, this article proposes to investigate the relationship between these paintings and the burden of colonial domination present in artistic practices.
