Le Brésil vu par les artistes voyageurs. La peinture comme source documentaire au XIX e siècle

Abstract

This article investigates part of the artistic production of a group of French painters who settled in Brazil during the course of the 19th Century. These artists visually documented the social, cultural, and economic aspects of the Brazilian colony. The diffusion of this artistic production contributed for a construction of a national identity of Brazil from the foreign perspective. Through the study of some paintings produced by these traveling artists, this article proposes to investigate the relationship between these paintings and the burden of colonial domination present in artistic practices.
Cet article analyse une partie de la production artistique d'un groupe de peintres français ayant vécu au Brésil au cours du XIX e siècle. Ces artistes ont documenté visuellement, les aspects sociaux, culturels et économiques de la colonie brésilienne et la diffusion de leur oeuvre a contribué à la construction de l'identité coloniale brésilienne de par le regard de l'étranger. À travers l'étude de quelques peintures de ces artistes voyageurs, l'article propose d'analyser les relations entre les images produites et transmises, et la charge de la domination coloniale présente dans les pratiques artistiques. Este artigo investiga parte da produção artística de um conjunto de pintores franceses que se instalaram no Brasil durante o decorrer do século XIX. Esses artistas documentaram visualmente aspectos sociais, culturais e econômicos da colônia Brasileira e a difusão desse material contribuiu para a construção de uma identidade nacional segundo o olhar estrangeiro. Através do estudo de algumas pinturas realizadas por esses artistas viajantes, o artigo propõe investigar as relações entre as pinturas produzidas e veiculadas e a carga de dominação cultural presente nas práticas artísticas.
