Sols et paysages : quelques problèmes d'écologie du sol

Abstract : A study of the soil layers should be considered as a part of every geographical analysis of landscapes. But if there is a regular correlation between landscape's and soil's units at a small scale, such anoccurrence is seldom found at medium or large scales. Any attempt to establish spatial naturaldivisions must consider a certain hierarchy of factors, the more important of which are the litologicaland morphological data and the vegetation cover, this last element being frequently considered as themain integrating component of natural environment. But it is not so unfrequent that soils are notdetermined by these very factors. A soil's evolution obeys its own rhythms : whether slow or quick, pedogenesis shows out that there are various levels of pedological inertia, generally related to station'sequilibria, and that the other components of the landscape do not always point them out. According tocircumstances, a soil will show off the influence of its vegetal cover or of its bedrock, the last one beingfrequently very important : though they can't be perceived in the landscape the smaller lithologicaldiscontinuities are able to change completely the pedogenetic trend. If oriented towardsmorphogenetical explanations a syntematical distribution. Soils will put the accent on the meaning andclassification of genesis processes. When a landscape's distribution is a chorological one, thepedological classification recognizes various soil taxis which do not have any palpable spatial meaning.
