The Snapchat effect

Résumé

This communication explores how French teenagers use social media to circumvent the constraints of schoolyard and parental control, which prohibit them from showing themselves with teenagers of the opposite sex or with younger ones. Failure to adhere to these rules results in the risk of being subjected to mockeries, insults, rumors, and even physical attacks by peers. Social media, particularly Snapchat, offers an opportunity for teenagers to create mixed and intergenerational connections away from prying eyes. The ephemeral and screenshot control features of Snapchat make it a popular platform for sharing intimate content, as users can share without fear of lasting consequences while still having multiple opportunities to perfect their message. However, even on Snapchat, teenagers are not entirely free from peer control. They share passwords to maintain their snap streaks, collectively view and share snaps, use fake identities to gather information, and have strategies for anonymously watching and saving content. These behaviors can lead to online confidences becoming a threat to young people's reputation.
