Une histoire politique de l’environnement ? : I : Construire un objet

Abstract : This article is a historiographical review focusing on recent French works that have dealt with the construction of research objects in the field of the political history of the environment. The notion of « common » has been the subject of numerous analyses: from the Middle Ages to the modern era, spaces partially removed from ownership have been the object of very diverse investments. The concept of « wilderness », examined by William Cronon, is inscribed in the history of references to the American landscape (through the sublime and the frontier). Wilderness, however, prevents us from considering the environment in its dynamic relationships with social groups. From an other point of view, Jean-Pierre Devroey was interested in the concept of « hunger » in the Carolingian era: he highlights the importance of social, political, cultural and religious sedimentations in the sensitive manifestation of famines. The attention paid to concepts for constructing a political history of the environment testifies to new historical perspectives capable of articulating theoretical effort and empirical work.
