Female suffrage in British Art, Literature and History

his special issue of Caliban reassesses the discourses, controversies, and socio-political movements that prepared and followed the voting of the Representation of the People Act 1918. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Act which secured the principle of female suffrage in Britain, contributors explore the diverse ways in which women’s political status and citizenship were negotiated and theorized. Exploring a wide array of often understudied sources from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the present, the original essays included in this volume testify to the rich polyphony and vital complexity of the history of feminism, and to the difficulties inherent in the making and memorializing of such a history.
Dans le cadre du centenaire de la première loi britannique qui autorisa en 1918 certaines femmes à voter, ce numéro de Caliban réunit un ensemble d’articles portant sur l’histoire et les représentations du droit de vote féminin, dans une perspective interdisciplinaire. Les auteur(e)s reviennent sur la genèse du droit de vote féminin au début du XIXe siècle et étudient ses représentations multiples et contradictoires dans l’espace public, dans la presse, au théâtre et dans la littérature. Ce numéro s’interroge enfin sur le processus de mémorialisation de l’histoire du féminisme et de l’héritage des luttes pour les droits des femmes en ce début de XXIe siècle.
