In 2009, the celebrations surrounding the fiftieth anniversary of the Cuban revolution were an opportunity for Irish trade unions to explore their connections with the socialist regime of Fidel Castro. Their discourse, punctuated by revolutionary phantasies and historical references, mixed the myth of the rebellious Cuba with the imagery of Irish anti-imperialism. The anniversary gave momentum to their campaigns against the American embargo on Cuba and for the liberation of the Cuban five.
