Une reconversion professionnelle inattendue : du droit international à l’artisanat

Abstract : This talk provides insight into the transformations of the subject with respect to its activity, starting from a case study based on the biographical approach. This study is based on the life story of a young graduate with a master’s degree in international law, who retrained as an entrepreneurial plumber after the refurbishment and redecoration of a “music cellar”. The discovery of the pleasures of manual work and the visible renovation of his cellar are at the origin of a shift in the relationship with work impacting the “Self-project”. The transformations of the subject with respect to its activity are analysed here through the dynamics of identity transformation. The work is based on the assumption that human activity is accompanied by a subjective experience (Barbier and Durand, 2017, p.16). Activity as a unique experience of the subject is analysed here in a larger context, as an integral part of the life story of the subject, a story characterised by breaks and continuities accumulated on its path. According to Pineau (1991), the experiences that lead to knowledge are those causing a break in the usual relations the individual maintains with what surrounds them. While trying to “repair” this break, the subject changes its relationship with its environment (human or material), a change bringing about a reorganisation of its “stock of available knowledge” – a tool for understanding oneself and the world (Delory-Momberger, 2005). This case study showcases the value of studying activity through the biographical method. The specificity of life stories, the preferred tool for data collection in this approach, offers the possibility to analyse the experience both in its situated dimension through a micro-phenomenological analysis, and in its biographical dimension, by anchoring the experience in the subject’s path (Breton, 2020).
